A dog that escaped from her Bolney home has won a rosette at the Felbridge show.
A dog managed to come third in the rescue dog class at the Felbridge show after being entered into the event by a man who found her on the street on his way to the event.
Bonnie, a five-year-old Beagle-Cross managed to slip out from her house in Bolney, West Sussex on Sunday, alarming her owners.
John Wilmer was taking his own two dogs to the show when he spotted Bonnie by the side of the road later that day.
“I was in a rush to get to the Felbridge show when I spotted Bonnie and put her in the car”, Wilmer said. “I did leave a Facebook message before taking her away”.
After Bonnie won third prize in the rescue dog class, Wilmer felt justified in entering her in the event. “She just seemed so lovely,” he said. “So I thought why not?”
Bonnie’s parents started scouring the neighbourhood for her soon after she disappeared. They also put up an appeal on social media.
Bonnie’s owners were worried she wouldn’t have known the way to get back as she used to be a street dog. She was living on the streets before being rescued by a charity. She joined Paula Closier and her family four years ago.
While Ms Closier is relieved that Bonnie is safe, she’s equally thrilled that Bonnie is a winner. When John brought home Bonnie, she couldn’t believe that Bonnie won a rosette.
“You couldn’t make this stuff up,” she said. “She had such a full life.”
