Firefighters have managed to rescue a blind dog from a ‘rocky’ situation.
A blind, 13-year-old dog named Cesar lives next to a construction site in Pasadena, California, with his owner.
According to his owner Mary, Cesar accidentally wandered into the construction site near his home at around 7pm last Tuesday. Due to Cesar’s lack of eyesight and the unfamiliar territory, he accidentally fell into the 0.9 metre wide, 4.5 metre deep hole.
Mary was initially unaware of Cesar’s situation, and was only alerted to it by the barking of her other dog.

The search and rescue team soon arrived at the construction site.
While rescuing animals from a hole in the ground might seem straightforward, it can be much more complicated according to Pasadena Fire Chief Chad Augustin. The confined space present unique challenges for rescuers.
“There are a number of steps and precautions that our firefighters need to take. This is to ensure the safety of both the dog and our firefighters,” Mr Augustin said.

The rescue team created a contraption of ropes and pulleys to lower one of the rescuers into the hole. Once the rescuer reached the bottom of the pit, they secured Cesar in a harness and lifted him back to ground level.
The rescue team was extremely efficient with the rescue operation taking roughly 12 minutes.
Despite falling four and a half metres, and trapped at the bottom for a while, Cesar appeared to be healthy and uninjured. After a quick body shake to shake off the construction dust and dirt, Cesar was returned to the relieved Mary.
