She was rescued from horrendous conditions that were borderline criminal. Now she’s fighting criminality herself.
Bonnie is a loving and friendly Labrador who was rescued from a farm in Wales last year. She was only six months old when she was found, and it was pretty evident that she was neglected.
Now, the 19 month old puppy is joining the Gloucestershire Police in order to fight other crimes. She has just completed her training and will soon be joining the taskforce to assist officers with arrest warrants and narcotic searches.
When Bonnie was found, she was underweight, suffered from skin abnormalities and her living conditions were horrific, unhygienic, and deadly.
The South Wales Police also managed to save 20 other dogs from the puppy farm during the rescue operation.
Most of the rescues were sent to the RSPCA’s West Hatch Animal Centre to be rehomed. However, the staff at the centre noticed that Bonnie had the potential to become a police dog.
And the police department thought so too. Thus, Bonnie began her training as a police dog with dog handler Claire Todd. Bonnie has since completed her training in proactive cash, drugs and firearms searching.
Gemma Cooper is the RSPCA inspector who investigated the case and rescued Bonnie. She said that she was horrified by the state of the living conditions and the health of the puppies.
It was obvious the dogs spent the majority of their lives locked up in the farm. She said the dogs were terrified of the outside world, and none of them knew how to walk on a leash.
Initially, Bonnie joined the fire services as a recovery dog but failed because she was scared of dark and confined places. And it’s not a surprise why, given her previous living conditions.
What’s Bonnie Up To Now?
Bonnie now lives with and works alongside Police Constable Hunt and Police Dog Django in a loving home. He says it’s amazing how far she’s come given the awful start she had in life.
“Bonnie loves her job. She loves playing and she’s very hard working. To her, it seems like a big, fun game.”
Soon, Bonnie will have her skills put to the test in the real world doing drug searches and warrants.
It’s incredible how Bonnie got such a horrendous start to her life and still managed to become a Police Dog. Let us know in the comments below your thoughts.
