After spending a whopping 840 days in a shelter, a lovable nine-year-old rescue dog that charmed the hearts of thousands of people online has finally found a loving forever home.
A Kelpie named Magenta charmed people all across social media with her story, which was shared on RSPCA NSW’s Facebook page and quickly became one of the most talked about posts of all time. With over 3,300 comments and 3,200 shares, her story touched the hearts of so many.
This led to hundreds of people from all over the country writing in to express their interest in adopting her.
Magenta’s New Owners
Magenta has been thriving since her retraining, humanising, and surgery. Her new owners are absolutely smitten with her and shower her with love all the time.
“She has settled into her new home tremendously well,” they said. “Her confidence is growing and growing every single day, and she loves wagging her tail more and more.”
“She had a really difficult life and I thought she would be happy here with us.”

Magenta was one of the 27,000 animals that was going to spend Christmas in foster care, but her luck changed when her new humans arrived just in time for Christmas!
One of the people that was most delighted to hear the news of Magenta’s adoption was RSPCA’s Kate Conaghan. She’d been fostering her after the kelpie had leg surgery.
“Magenta was able to spend Christmas in her new home with her new family. We found a lovely semi-retired couple and they fell in love with her,” she said.
“More than anything, I think what Magenta is enjoying the most is having lots of different furniture to lie on and two people all to herself. This is probably all she’s ever wanted.”
Difficult Past
Magenta’s previous owners were not caring for her properly according to Conaghan.
“She wasn’t given the appropriate shelter or enough food and water at times,” she said. “She was also chained up a lot of the time too.”
This meant that Magenta had a lot to learn when she first arrived at the shelter.

Why Does My Dog Do That? Why Does My Dog Sigh?
“First of all, she had to learn to spend time off leash. For a dog that’s been tied up for long periods of time, learning to be free was quite challenging,” Conaghan said.
“For example, she would get worried when left alone in an open space unattended, and she would start to dig.”
“It’s very important to teach a working dog to relax and enjoy their down time, they’re not used to having so much down time.”
Conaghan witnessed Magenta’s confidence growing as she became more accustomed to other people. Soon, Magenta was out of her shell and playing gently with Conaghan’s other dogs.
“Watching Magenta slowly learn how to play with my other dogs was very cute,” she said. “She may also have given birth to puppies. It seemed that way through her interactions with other dogs.”
Her New Owners Must Understand Her Needs
When choosing Magenta’s new owners, Conaghan said it was important for them to understand her traumatic history and her needs.

“When a dog has been in care for such a long time, you want to make sure they go to a home that understands and accommodates their needs.”
Her new owners have praised the wonderful work that the RSPCA team have done to help Magenta over the past two years. They are also encouraging others to consider adopting rescue dogs, become volunteers at shelters, or foster parents.
“The effort that the RSPCA NSW team has put into Magenta is incredible,” they said.
“Everyone there cares so much, you can see the love on everyone’s faces when we went to pick Magenta up.”
“There are so many beautiful rescue dogs in shelters that just want, and deserve, a second chance.”
