A pet dog has been labelled a hero after saving her family from a house fire on Christmas Eve.
It was approximately 1:30 in the morning on Saturday when homeowner Stephanie Mulhall’s pet dog named Chloe began scratching furiously at her bedroom door in Bardonia, New York. Groggily, she got up to see what the problem was, but immediately noticed smoke filling up the house.

“It was at around 1:35 am to 1:45am when our dog started scratching at our door,” Mulhall said. “As soon as I opened the door, smoke filled my face. And when my husband went downstairs to check, he saw that the house was on fire.”
Thanks to the dog’s warning, the family was able to wake up their children and escape from their burning house. After ensuring that everyone was safe, she dialled 911.
“The children were crying and screaming,” Mulhall said. “They were both scared and the fire alarms were really loud. My older son was able to jump out of bed and exit the house by himself. But I had to carry the baby down the stairs because he was very scared.”
While the exact cause of the fire is unknown, the fire inspector handling the case believes that the fire was started outside of the house. And while the fire department was able to bring the fire under control and no one was injured, the house has been deemed as uninhabitable.

Community to the rescue
As the event happened so close to Christmas, the family said they have received so much love and support from their community. The family has received donations of clothes, shoes, hats, and even Christmas gifts for their children.
Traci Cohen, a close friend of the family, created a GoFundMe page to help support the family. It has already raised $38,000, far surpassing its goal of $20,000.
“Chloe, the family dog scratched furiously at the bedroom door to alert her owners of a fire overnight while everyone was sleeping, essentially saving the whole family!” Cohen wrote on the GoFundMe page.
“Right now, the family needs community support more than anything else. With the family losing everything a day before Christmas, they need basic essentials like clothing (for all members of the family), some Christmas gifts for the kids, and anything else they might need to get settled. Hopefully this GoFundMe campaign can get the community’s help in providing this young family with what they need!”
