When a man got lost in the desert and the rescue crew couldn’t locate him, they turned to his best friend for help. And he managed to do what no one else could.
Near the end of November, Don Gregorio Romero mysteriously disappeared from his home in Sonora, Mexico. Understandably, the 84-year-old man’s family was concerned for his welfare. It is thought that Romero might have wandered off in a disoriented state and was unable to find his way home.
After his family searched around the town for hours and coming up empty, they decided to reach out to the local authorities for help.

However, Romero’s hero will end up being someone with no search and rescue training at all.
For days and days, the search and rescue crews looked for any signs of Romero in the surrounding desert region, but they had no luck in locating him. The crew even enlisted the help of skilled tracking dogs, but even they couldn’t manage to uncover any clues about Romero’s whereabouts.
Soon days turned into a week, and with hopes of finding Romero alive dwindling, the rescue crews decided to turn to someone that knows Romero the best.

They asked Palomo, Romero’s dog, for help.
The rescue crew took Palomo to the location where Romero was last seen almost a week ago.
Sure enough, the pup jumped into action. Having caught the lingering scent of his beloved owner, Palomo started walking towards the barren desert, with the rescuers right on his tail.
Palomo trusted his nose and his heart for nearly two miles across the barren landscape, between hills, roads, and ravines, to reach Don Gregorio. He was exhausted and dehydrated, but fortunately still alive.

The Hero Of The Day
After making sure that Romero was okay for the journey back, the rescuers led Romero out of the desert and back into familiar territory. But to everyone who took part in Romero’s rescue, there was no doubt about who was to thank for rescueing him.
“The hero is definitely Palomo, the puppy who found his owner!” wrote Debora Mtz, a member of the search party.
Romero was taken in to a local hospital where he was treated for exposure and dehydration. Even at the hospital, Palomo’s dedication to his owner was also on full display.

Palomo stood faithfully outside the hospital, waiting for his best friend to be released.
“There is no doubt that the love that animals have for their owners is immeasurable,” officials wrote. “But in this case, the love went far beyond what was expected. It helped save the owner’s life by guiding the rescue personnel, friends, and family to locate his owner.”
