In India, a loyal pet dog was discovered patiently awaiting his owner for several months outside a mortuary, seemingly holding onto the hope that his master will return.
The loyal canine had been observed loyally waiting outside the mortuary of a district hospital in the southern state of Kerala, Kannur, for four months, having tracked his owner to the hospital.
In the days following his owner’s passing, the dog refused to eat anything and would simply stare at the hospital’s locked doors.
Vikas Kumar, a hospital staff member, said, “four months ago, a patient arrived at the hospital with his dog alongside him. Unfortunately, the patient passed away and the dog saw their owner being transported to the mortuary.”

Ramu the faithful dog
Hospital staff is currently providing care for the dog, who has also been given a new name – Ramu.
“The dog seems to believe that its owner is still here. He never leaves this place and has remained here for the past four months,” he further explained.
There was a chance that the patient’s body was taken out of the building through a different exit, which may have given Ramu the impression that his owner was still within the premises.
Ramu now receives homemade meals from Maya Gopalakrishnan, a doctor at the hospital. She mentioned that Ramu isn’t particularly keen on rice but enjoys eggs and fish.

Unsure who Ramu’s owner was
A hospital attendant, Rajesh Kumar, was the first to notice Ramu outside the mortuary. He said that the hospital staff made inquiries but couldn’t determine which patient the dog belonged to.
“The dog often sits on the ramp where bodies are transported to the mortuary. Thus we believe that the dog might be sitting there with the hope that his master will return one day,” Kumar said.
Occasionally, Ramu wanders over to the nearby physiotherapy department but will always return to the mortuary during the night. He tends to keep to himself and has specific food preferences, the staff said.
The dog’s story, similar to the renowned loyal canines like Hachiko in Japan and Fida in Italy, has garnered praise by people all over the world.
As one user on X, formerly known as Twitter, said, “A dog loves you more than he loves himself.”
