The owner of a dog accessory shop has criticized a building society for their post on social media suggesting that bow ties for pets are “useless”.
Lucy Thompson, a store owner in Beverly, said Nationwide’s post on social media ‘baffled and offended’ her.
Thompson said the author of the post was clearly not a dog lover, and did not realise the amount of joy little items such as bow ties brought to dog owners.

Are Dog Bow Ties Pointless?
Ms Thompson, who finally achieved her dream of launching a dog boutique during the lockdown, is disgusted and offended by the remark from the Nationwide representative saying what she was doing was “pointless”.
“This is a nation of dog lovers. Accessories such as bow ties and bandanas are incredibly popular and have a place in every owner’s household,” Ms Thompson said.

She added that the author should lighten up and spread some joy, claiming that the dog accessory they were dissing was far from being pointless if it made the owner smile.
“Whoever said that is clearly not a dog lover,” Ms Thompson added.
“One of my customers is making hand-made bow ties for dogs to raise money for a cancer charity,” she said.
“Try and tell her that what she is doing is pointless.”
One respondent shared that, “Nothing is pointless if it brings joy, even if it’s only for a brief period of time.”
Ms Thompson has bit back at the post, referring to the post as “pointless”. She is also still waiting for an apology after directly responding to the comments on the post.
Nationwide replied saying, “We love dogs, we love bow ties, we love dogs in bow ties!”
“The post was meant to encourage light-hearted conversation on purchases. We did not intend to offend anyone.”
