Golden retrievers are fun to have around. They are very active dogs that enjoy different activities.
One particular family owns several retrievers and takes care of them. However, one of the retrievers is displaying a bizarre habit.
The dog named Bijyu likes to bite. However, it’s not an aggressive or malicious type of biting. Bijyu likes to hold on to anything and everything he encounters. For example, when a filming crew entered the house, Bijyu held on to the cameraman’s t-shirt.
To help solve Bijyu’s problem, animal behaviorist Chan Jong was invited inside the owner’s home. He saw how Bijyu behaved and made his diagnosis. Bijyu’s biting habit was strange.
Usually, when dogs bite something, they wave it around. In Bijyu’s case, he remains still. This means he finds comfort in holding onto something. It’s his way to relieve stress.
Chan Jong’s solution involved a tool and some training. He used a dog toy designed for tug of war. The goal was to get the dog used to impulse control and teach him when to let go of the toy.
Bijyu had to stay still before he was allowed to play with the toy. Setting such boundaries allows the dog to understand when not to bite. This type of training took several repetitions before the dog could understand it well.
Chan Jong also added an additional challenge for Bijyu. He scattered several objects across the floor; some of them where bowling pins and bottles. The expert threw the chew toy at the end of the scattered pile.
Bijyu had to get the toy without knocking over the bottles and pins. The first two attempts were a failure. The dog was unaware of the challenge. However, during the third try, Bijyu figured out that he had to be careful when getting the toy. It was a training method that utilized a game, and it worked.
