The Top Dog Breeds for Allergy Sufferers

The Top Dog Breeds for Allergy Sufferers

Megan Hurley August 31, 2023

For many allergy sufferers, the dream of owning a dog might seem out of reach due to the irritating symptoms that come with pet allergies. However, not all hope is lost!

There are dog breeds specifically known for being hypoallergenic such as Poodles, Labradoodles, Bichon Frise, and Portuguese Water Dogs just to name a few. These dogs produce fewer allergens which makes them more suitable for individuals with allergies.

In this article, we’ll explore what hypoallergenic dogs are and list some of the best dog breeds to consider if you’re allergic to dogs. Hopefully, it will allow you to enjoy the joys of pet ownership without the constant sneezing and itching!

Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds: Solution For Allergy Sufferers!

It’s a pity that not everyone can enjoy burying their faces in the soft fur of a dog due to allergies. According to a 2018 review published to the Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Research, approximately 10 to 20% of the global population experiences allergies to cats or dogs (source).

However, instead of living without any pets, these allergy sufferers might be able to consider owning hypoallergenic pets.

Contrary to popular belief, there isn’t a single dog breed that can be labeled ‘completely hypoallergenic’. Rather, there are dog breeds that are considered to be less allergenic. This means that these dog breeds tend to trigger fewer reactions in individuals with allergies.

The cause of most people’s allergies to pets is a protein found in dog’s saliva named Dander. Dander is tiny pieces of dead skin that shed and it is found in nearly all pets with fur or feathers.

Dander triggers allergic responses in individuals. While allergy symptoms can vary from person to person, the following are the most typical among those who are allergic to dander:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Watery/itchy eyes
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Itchy or sore throat.

Picking a Hypoallergenic Dog Breed For Allergy Sufferers

Before selecting a hypoallergenic dog, you should consider the size, energy levels and characteristics of the dog.

With so many different breeds to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. So we’ve written up an article to help you decide which dog breed is perfect for your lifestyle, which you can read here. So let’s get started!

Smaller Hypoallergenic Breeds: Miniature Poodles, Maltese, Bichon Frise, Miniature Schnauzer, Yorkshire Terrier, and Shih Tzu.

Miniature Poodle

Miniature poodles are a popular choice for allergy sufferers due to their hypoallergenic coat. Their tightly curled fur traps dander and reduces shedding, minimizing allergen exposure. These dogs are athletic, intelligent, and love to have fun. They are perfect for those looking for a ‘big dog’ personality in a small size.

Maltese

Maltese dogs have silky, long coats that produce minimal shedding and dander. Regular grooming is essential to keep their coats healthy and reduce allergen accumulation.

Bichon Frise

With their curly, fluffy coats, Bichon Frises are another excellent choice for allergy sufferers. Their hair grows continuously, similar to human hair, which means less shedding and less dander release into the environment.

Miniature Schnauzer

Miniature Schnauzer’s wiry coat sheds minimally and requires regular grooming to prevent matting and dander buildup.

Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkies have a fine, silky coat that produces fewer allergens. Their small size makes them suitable for apartment living, and their adorable appearance adds to their charm. They love to play and will not hesitate to protect their family.

Shih Tzu

With a luxurious long coat, Shih Tzus are known for their hypoallergenic qualities. The ‘lion dog’ is happiest when they are next to, or sitting on top of, their favorite human. They are highly affectionate and great with kids, but regular grooming is essential to maintain their coat and keep allergens at bay.

Lagotto Romagnolo

Originally bred as a truffle-hunting dog, the Lagotto Romagnolo has a curly coat that sheds minimally. This breed is known for its affectionate and friendly nature.

Conclusion

Living with allergies doesn’t mean you have to give up your dream of having a furry friend by your side. These hypoallergenic dog breeds offer companionship, loyalty, and minimal allergen exposure.

However, it’s important to remember that while these breeds are less likely to trigger allergies, individual sensitivities vary. Regular grooming, cleaning, and consulting with your allergist can help ensure a happy life with your chosen furry companion.

Always spend some time with the breed before bringing one home to see how your allergies react. With the right preparation and the right breed, you can enjoy the company of a loving canine friend without constant sneezing and itching.
