Due to the rise in recent dog attacks, a trainer decided to create the ultimate safe space for dogs and their owners.
Upon learning about the increase in dog attacks in the Noosa area, a local dog trainer decided to try an idea that has since exploded in popularity.
Julie Vella, the owner of What Dogs Want, runs a doggy daycare in Noosa, Australia, three days a week. But she realised that there weren’t any ultimate private dog parks near her home.
So she decided to open one at her facility.

“After the recent attacks, a lot of owners are anxious or scared to take their dogs to dog parks or going for walks,” Vella said.
“Dog attacks are distressing for everyone involved. Although I’ve never had one myself, I hear about a lot of them through my customers.”
“I created this facility to cater to the people who might be anxious while walking their dogs, or if their dogs are anxious or reactive.”
Additionally, Vella said that her customers have told her about the numerous cases of dog baiting around the region.

“This area is dedicated for people and their dogs, providing owners with a sense of security during their outings. They can rest assured that such incidents will never occur here,” she assured.
“The dogs can run around freely, engage in play, and simply be a dog without any potential threats in a safe and controlled setting,” she elaborated.
Rise in dog attacks
In 2022, there were 60 reported cases of dog attacks within the Noosa shire according to a spokesperson from the Noosa Council. Out of this total, 27 of the incidents were attacks on people.
“There have already been 77 reported attacks so far this year,” the spokesperson said. “And out of the 77, 18 of them were attacks on people.”
“The Council wants to remind all dog owners that they could potentially face legal and financial repercussions for their dogs’ behavior. It is the responsibility of every dog owner to ensure that their pets do not engage in attacks on people or other animals or cause fear.”
“Pet owners are required to maintain a secure enclosure that effectively prevents the animals from wandering or escaping their property,” the spokesperson added.

“When in public, dogs must always remain under control, typically through the use of a leash. Even within designated off-leash zones, owners are still required to exercise effective control over their dogs.”
What Dogs Want private dog park provides an expansive, fully enclosed space for dogs to play and explore. The facility also features a sandpit, dual pools featuring a slide, a giant ball pit, tunnels, a trampoline, and much more.
There are benches and umbrellas for humans to relax while watching their dogs play.
The address of the private dog park is only revealed to customers once they’ve booked and paid for their 45-minute session online.
Nothing quite like it
Since opening its doors two weeks ago, the business has been “going crazy” according to Ms Vella.
“There’s simply nothing quite like this around this area. I know there’s one in Brisbane, but nothing in the Sunshine Coast region, so it’s definitely needed,” Ms Vella said.
“The property is located on two acres of land on top of a hill that overlooks Noosa. We are surrounded by hundreds of acres so the views are simply gorgeous. It’s so beautiful.”
