Sit, lie down, fetch are all vital commands that your dog should follow. But let’s be honest, they aren’t that impressive when all dogs know them. So here is a trick that will be totally unique to your dog that will amaze your friends and family: a handstand.
For some smaller dogs like Chihuahuas, this ability comes natural to them. They are better at balancing when inverted due to their larger head size and smaller body.
However, you can also teach larger dogs this trick, but make sure that you proceed very slowly to prevent your dog from injuries.
Building Muscle
First, your dog will need to build up its muscles before the trick can be performed without assistance.
Firstly, have your dog stand in front of a wall, facing away from it.
Raise the dog’s hind legs by placing a book or a small block underneath them.
Transitioning To Unassisted
Keep on repeating this step until your dog is comfortable raising himself into position from off the ground. If your dog is able to place his back legs on the wall without assistance, it is ready for the next step.
Dangle his favourite treats just in front of him to encourage it to move away from the wall. You probably need to support your dog to let it get its balance at first. You can do this by placing a hand under its belly.
And tadaaa!!!! It might have taken a while, but your dog should soon be able to do a handstand on command, all on his own.
