A dedicated dog owner has taken one last journey with his dog of 10 years.
Carlos Fresco has been with his Labradoodle Monty for over 10 years, but he knew the good times were coming to an end. For the past 18 months, Monty has been fighting Leukemia but his condition was not getting any better. So Fresco decided he would make Monty’s final days as happy as possible, by taking one last trip together.

Carlos and Monty on their last adventure together.
One of Monty’s favourite activities was hiking up the Pen Y Fan, one of the highest mountains in Wales. However, Monty’s deteriorating health meant that he was no longer able to hike up the mountain alongside Carlos, so Carlos devised another way the two of them can make it to the peak. He would simply push Monty along in a wheelbarrow.
Fellow hikers were initially very confused as to why the pooch was in a wheelbarrow, but started tearing up once Carlos told them the story. Some even offered to help push Monty up the mountain. Although he was very weak, Monty seemed to enjoy the spotlight and all the attention he was getting from strangers. In fact, Monty was in such a good spirit that it seemed like he was cured from his condition.

Monty enjoyed all the attention he got from the fellow hikers.
Monty initially overcame Leukemia through numerous chemotherapy treatments. However, when the disease returned a year later, he could not beat it a second time. Monty passed away shortly after their last hike together on June 21, with Carlos right by his side. However, the two of them did manage to spend one final Father’s Day together.
Reflecting back on their time together, Carlos remembers how many lives Monty has touched on in his lifetime. Monty greeted everyone with a smile on his face and with an overwhelming amount of affection. He was a constant reminder that life isn’t that bad. He was always there to offer support to Carlos whenever he needed it, was never judgemental, and provided comfort in the worst of times.
All without expecting anything in return.
