In Greenwood, South Carolina, a dog had the scare of his life when he fell inside a rock quarry. He was likely chasing animals in the woods when he found himself in deep trouble. Fortunately for him, the 60-foot drop didn’t cause him any injuries. He was alive and well, but he couldn’t get out.
The dog landed on one of the several ledges leading to the bottom of the quarry. There were no stairs or safe paths for him to either go up or down. Luckily, someone eventually saw him and called rescuers. He could have died of thirst or hunger if no one had saved him.
Combined effort
When the responders arrived at the quarry site, they were surprised to see the dog walking around without any injuries. They didn’t know how long he had been there, so they needed to get him out right away. He could already be dehydrated. The first thing the rescuers did was plan their course of action so that everyone would be safe.
Responders from Greenwood City Fire rescue and Greenwood County Fire rescue combined their efforts to get the dog to safety. They rigged up a rope system to gently lower down one brave firefighter. Once he got the dog, they were lowered 150 feet down to the bottom. There, fire trucks and emergency vehicles were waiting for them.
Returned to family
Thankfully, the rescue operation was a success. A vet checked on the dog, and they were delighted to see that he had only a few minor scrapes and bruises. The of was so friendly that some of his rescuers wanted to adopt him and name him Rocky.
However, the playful pooch already had a family. They were overjoyed to learn that their pet was alive and well. They told the shelter that he had gone missing the day before, and they were all looking for him. They were so grateful to everyone that saved him.
