Darong was a homeless dog that ended up at a local shelter after he was rescued. He was lucky because, unlike other dogs, he found his match soon enough. His adoptive mom fell in love with him the first time they met so she brought him home.
His life turned around once he was home. He no longer had to rummage the trash for food and he didn’t have to sleep out in the cold anymore. After struggling for so long, he finally lived a comfortable life.
Darong is a well-behaved dog. Despite spending all of his time outdoors in his previous life, he knows how to function now that he’s an indoor pup. But when his mom isn’t around, he transforms into a completely different dog.
As soon as his mom steps out, Darong panics. He sprints all over the house, then jumps up the table or the kitchen counter, and knocks down anything on his way. He also starts crying and howling and only stops once she’s back.
Darong’s mom thought he suffers from separation anxiety. It’s typical for most rescue dogs, after all. But even after taking him for a walk and giving him some treats, he still makes a huge mess when she leaves.
Eventually, Darong’s mom decided to consult with an animal behavior expert and Director Lee Chanjong of the Isaac Dog Training Center gladly offered to help. He observed the dog and he concluded that it wasn’t separation anxiety but fear of getting left behind.
Director Lee concluded that Darong once had a family before he became a stray. That betrayal took a toll on him and made him believe that people would always leave him behind, even though his mom always came back.
With proper training, Darong started to understand that her mom leaving the house doesn’t mean her abandoning him. He learned to trust that no matter how long she’s gone, she will always come back home.
