This Dog’s Quick Thinking May Have Saved His Owner’s Life

Megan Hurley October 18, 2021

An incredible dog has most likely saved the life of his owner after he was able to detect the his owner was about to have a seizure, right before it actually happened.

Max the German Shepherd reacted quickly when he detected that his owner, Tina, was about to experience a seizure. He immediately tried to get Tina’s attention before he helped to soften her fall as the seizure happened.

Incredibly, the entire moment was captured on camera. Tina was in the middle of training Max on how he should react when he noticed that a medical episode was about to occur. However, the training soon turned into a real life situation.

Tina, a self-described “epilepsy warrior”, shared her experience on her TikTok account, tinastikeleather. In the video, Tina is seen standing in the kitchen, next to the sink as Max snoozed beside her. Suddenly, Max shoots up off the floor and tries getting Tina’s attention. Whilst standing on his hind legs, Max proceeds to lick Tina’s face and refuses to sit down as Tina begins to wobble on her feet.

Not long after, Tina appears to collapse entirely and Max quickly dives underneath Tina in order to prevent her from having a hard impact with the ground. Max proceeds to lay there to prevent Tina from hitting her head on the floor.

TIna’s TikTok account is focused on raising awareness of epilepsy and the positive impacts that canines can play in helping those with the condition. A recent report released by the Epilepsy Foundation found that some dogs are able to detect the onset of an epileptic seizure seconds, or even minutes, before it actually happens. Dogs are able to communicate this information to their owners by exhibiting behaviours such as close eye contact, pawing, and barking.

It is believed that dogs are able to detect the oncoming seizures from the small body cues exhibited by humans. This is the result of the dog and its human developing a strong relationship over time.
