It was almost as if she was trying to say, “are you here to help me?”
When a stranger spotted a dog lying on a pile of trash for a couple of days in Missouri, he knew he had to do something to help. So he reached out to an organisation called Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL), who immediately dispatched a team of rescuers to look for the stray.
SRSL’s chief life saving officer, Donna Lochmann, was the first to spot the pup on the trash pile.

“When I saw her, she was still digging through the trash as she was hungry. We didn’t know she was hungry, but we could tell because she was skinny,” Lochmann said.

Initially, the pup was unaware of Lochmann’s presence. But as soon as she noticed the rescuer, she proceeded to hide behind the trash can.
Lochmann realised that in order to rescue the pup, she had to first gain the puppy’s trust. So she pulled out some treats in order to do that.
“She noticed the sausages right away,” Lochmann said. “But when I knelt down and tried to give her one, she walked straight past the food and came up next to me.”
Instead of accepting the sausage treat that Lochmann was offering her, the pup got in close with her rescue and looked at Lochmann straight in the eyes.

“It was almost as if she was trying to say, ‘are you here to help me?’” Lochmann said.
Now that trust has been formed, Lochmann was able to put a leash around the pup’s neck. Then she led the dog to the car.
Such a Loving Dog
As soon as the pair arrived at the shelter, the rescued pup began to win the hearts of all the staff at the shelter. Lochmann also gave her the affectionate name ‘Little Toes’.
“She was so sweet with everyone at the clinic,” Lochmann said. “She pretty much ran up to everyone for a hug.”
Fortunately, Little Toes didn’t have to stay at the shelter for very long. She only spent a day and a half at the shelter before going to a foster family. However, during her brief stay, she did her best to spread as much love as possible.
Nowadays, Little Toes spends much of her time giving love to her new foster parents and her dog sibling. Being in a safe and loving temporary home has allowed Little Toes’ sweet and loving personality to shine even brighter.
And as much as the staff at Stray Rescue of St Louis misses Little Toes’ hugs, they’re delighted to know that she will never go hungry again.
