How many dog owners let their little pooches sleep in bed with them? According to a recent survey by the Great Australian Dog, it seems like the majority of us do.
The survey of over 12,000 dog owners in Australia revealed that 65% of them sleep in the same bed as their dogs.
Find out why this veterinarian would never own these dog breeds.
The survey, conducted by the dog food company Scratch, also found that half of the respondents allow their dogs to sleep in the sheets. And nearly 75% of dog owners allow their dogs on the bed.
Katie Anderson is one of the pet owners in the survey who allows her dogs to sleep with her. The mum from Subiaco, WA, owns two dachshunds named Watson and Matilda, and she treats them just like any other family member. The mother of two little kids says that the dogs are allowed to sleep in her bed, on the couch, and under the sheets.
Should dogs be allowed on planes?
75% of the survey respondents also believe that dogs should be allowed on planes. And Ms Anderson completely agrees.
She got Watson when she lived overseas in Canada, and she was able to take Watson along on a weekend getaway to New York.
“He travelled in our hand luggage,” Ms Anderson said. “They have dog-friendly hotels in New York, so we were able to bring him along.”
“It wasn’t just the hotel that was dog-friendly either. We took him out to pubs and places around the hotel. At the airport, there was even a toilet room just for dogs as well. It had fake grass and a fire hydrant for your dog to pee on.”
“He came and did everything with us. That’s not yet possible here in Australia.”
Other interesting findings from the survey
If you’re spending more than $1000 on your dog every year, don’t worry, it’s quite normal. The survey found that most dog owners spend between $1000 and $4000 on the dogs every year.
Would you choose your dog or your husband in this situation?
For 73% of respondents, that figure also includes buying their dog at least six new dog toys a year.
The biggest difficulty about owning a dog according to the survey? Finding a suitable dog-sitter when going away.
