It is widely known amongst dog owners that our four-legged friends often seem almost human-like in their ability to express themselves and convey their emotions. Yet this particular story elevates this notion to a whole new level.
Earlier this week, Gannicus, an English Springer Spaniel, had an unfortunate accident in the town of Morgan, Redwood County.
He fell down an uncovered well.
The diameter of the well is between 16 to 18 inches wide, almost the same size as a New York-style pizza. It also has a number of pipes protruding from the walls of the well, making this story even more unlikely.
The 60-pound dog unexpectedly plummeted down 30 feet into the uncovered well, which shocked his family as they had only recently moved to the area.

It was Gannicus’ incessant barking which alerted his family to his situation. They contacted the Redwood County sheriff right away, who contacted the Morgan Fire Department chief Mark Jacobs.
As we made our way there, we talked about our plan of action and I half-jokingly said, “maybe we should lower a piece of steak on a rope and hope he grabs it and pulls himself out,’” Jacobs recalled.
Unfortunately, they didn’t have the piece of steak on hand, but they did have some rope. They created a loop at one end of the rope and lowered it down the well, hoping they could catch one of Gannicus’ legs.
Hilariously that didn’t happen. Instead, the dog bit the rope and latched on himself.

“As we hauled him up, the dog was still yapping and all I could make out were his pearly whites glinting at us,” Jacobs recounted.
Cover Up Those Wells!
More than one million Minnesotans rely on wells for their drinking water. However, many of the wells are no longer in use.
To protect the safety of these individuals, a law was established in the 1970s requiring all unused wells to be covered.

Gannicus’ owners said that the previous homeowners also failed to disclose all the wells on the property, which is required by law.
The well is expected to be sealed off permanently.
Gannicus’ owners were thankful for all the effort that the rescuers put in to rescue their dog.
“I’m so thankful for all that you have done and I sincerely hope you don’t have to do it again,” they said.
