What would you do if your husband would rather give up your dog than continue to pay your dog’s vet bills?
A woman on Reddit is questioning whether she married the wrong man after her husband told the Redditor that he wants to put their dog down because he costs them too much money.
The bills add up to about £700 to £800 each year.
Dogs love us unconditionally and pretty much ask for nothing in return.
So imagine the heartbreak this woman felt when her husband told her that he’d rather put her dog down than continue to pay for its vet bills.
The 27 year old Redditor explained that she adopted her dog, Fido, before she got married. She considers him to be ‘a part of the family’ just like all her loved ones.
However, Fido has recently developed allergies which require immunotherapy. For significant allergy outbreaks, Fido can get the occasional staph infections which are treated using antibiotics and steroids.
“Sure, it’s expensive,” the Redditor said. “But it’s not something I would call serious.”
“The average yearly vet bill comes to around £700 to £800. Sometimes it’s more, and sometimes it’s less.”
“Give up the dog”
While her husband has been complaining about the cost for the dog for months, he had never revealed his feelings until the dog’s allergies got worse, and more frequent.
“My husband got upset with Fido as he has been extra itchy later due to being outside more often than usual. But he hasn’t said it outright until tonight.”
The Redditor asked her husband what was making him upset, and he said it was the dog. He said that he will not keep on paying the dog’s bills. And if the dog’s costs keep on increasing, he would want her to give up her dog.
The Redditor was shocked at her husband’s revelation and is rethinking their entire relationship and honestly I don’t blame her. She can’t believe how he could be so inconsiderate of her own feelings.
“I am unsure about being in a relationship with someone who doesn’t feel the same way about animals as I do.”
What do others say?
The comments on the Reddit post have been mixed.
Most users have suggested that she should sit down and discuss this issue with her husband before leaving. Others have also empathised with her husband, suggesting the he could be worried about their overall financial situation.
“Your husband might be worried about your finances,” one user said. “You should speak to him about that as there might be some underlying issues that you aren’t aware of.”
And to be fair, we’re only getting one side of the story, as another user said.
“The woman clearly loves her dog and is distraught by her husband’s response. However, she’s the only one telling her side of the story, so we probably shouldn’t be too judgemental.”
“She might be understating the dog’s problems or underquoting the vet bill. After all, £800 is already pretty high to be honest. I’m sure her husband isn’t a heartless dog-killer.”
What do you think about this situation? Would you keep your dog even if it’s causing your financial stress?
