For many years, Pit Bulls have always been seen as aggressive dogs. Many people even say that these dogs are unsuitable as house pets because of how violent and aggressive they are. However, this perception about Pit Bulls is slowly changing, thanks to the advocates who work hard to spread awareness about the breed.
A Pit Bull named Kiah was rescued from an abusive owner. Aside from getting physically abused, she was also neglected. Kiah’s been through so much pain, but she remains a sweet and gentle dog. She’s also quite intelligent and learned to pick up basic commands quickly.
Because of her unique traits, Kiah was given a chance to be trained as a police dog. The Poughkeepsie Police Department had been looking for a dog to strengthen its drug detection capabilities. During training, Kiah was assigned to Officer Justin Bruzgul as her handler. They both trained under a man named Brad Croft, a well-known dog trainer for the police.
He stated that although it was initially hard to train Kiah, she was a fast learner. Officer Bruzgul and Kiah passed the training and were eventually returned to their unit in Poughkeepsie as part of the narcotics squad. It turns out that Kiah became the first Pit Bull to become a police dog in New York.
Whenever people see Kiah, they find it hard to believe that a Pit Bull can become a police dog. Aside from being Kiah’s handler, Officer Bruzgul also became a voice for Kiah. He educates people that a dog’s behavior is not dependent on a dog’s breed but how they were raised plays an essential role in their behavior and personality.
Now, Kiah isn’t just keeping the streets of Poughkeepsie safe from illegal drugs, but she’s also helping other Pit Bulls get a chance to get adopted. Kiah is changing the minds of people about Pit Bulls. Here’s a video featuring Kiah in action. After watching this video, you’ll definitely change your mind about Pit Bulls and see how lovable they truly are.
