Magpies are renowned in Australia for swooping humans and animals. So what made this magpie become the best friend of an English Staffy?
Juliette Wells was taking her English Staffy, called Peggy, out on a walk near their home on the Gold Coast, Australia, when she found a poor baby magpie on the ground. After attempting to reunite the baby magpie with her parents numerous times with no luck, she decided to take the baby bird home in order to nurture it back to health. She decided to name the baby magpie ‘Molly’.
Initially, Peggy the dog was unsure about their feathered visitor. However, she soon began to produce milk in order to keep Molly alive. Now, they are inseparable. They do everything together. They go everywhere together. Sunbathing, playing ball, snuggling, you name it.
When Peggy gave birth to a litter of pups, Ms Wells was a little concerned about what that would mean for their relationship. However, Molly was right there by Peggy’s side, as she has always been. Molly helps keep an eye on the pups and understandably, the little pups have also become good friends with Molly.
Going Viral
Peggy and Molly have won the hearts of thousands of fans around the world with their unique relationship. It’s not everyday where a dog becomes the best friend of a bird, let alone a magpie. Videos of the pair playing and hanging out together have been viewed millions of times around the globe.
Molly: a free bird?
Whilst Molly and Peggy have become best friends, Ms Wells is adamant that Molly is a free bird who is welcome to take off whenever she pleases. Even though Ms Wells would love if Molly were to live with them forever, she also wants Molly to have a family of her own. Molly is a wild bird at heart, and that the natural thing for Molly is to meet a fellow magpie and have little baby magpies. If that does happen, Ms Wells would certainly welcome the family into her home with open arms.
