Buddy has spent more than 500 days in a rescue shelter after vets refused to put him down.
Buddy’s original owner brought him in to be euthanized, which the vets refused.
Despite being labelled as a ‘affectionate chap’ by the Brent Knoll Animal Centre in Somerset, England, the 10 year old Buddy has yet to be found a permanent home. He has spent more time at the rescue shelter than any other animal.
Buddy’s original owners wanted to put him down as they could no longer cope with Buddy’s difficult behaviour. However, the vets refused to put him down.
The reason for Buddy’s long stay at the shelter stems from a ‘less than ideal’ relationship with his previous owner. While Buddy is undoubtedly affectionate, he has some behavioural issues due to his less than ideal relationship with his previous owner.
After a while, Buddy started to fight back against his owner. It was at this point that the original owner requested the vets to euthanize Buddy. However, the vets rejected the request.
The team at the shelter are trying to retrain Buddy to remove his undesirable behaviours using positive reinforcement. They are hopeful that Buddy will become a ‘normal’ dog soon.
However, the staff at the shelter also knows that finding Buddy a new home won’t be easy. He’s going to need patient and conscientious owners who understand the experiences that he’s gone through. It won’t be easy.
Like most animals who end up in one of RSPCA’s shelters across the country, it can take a long time to get the animals to a stage where they are ready for a second chance at family. It can take months of effort, care, and especially love to get the animals ready for a new home. But every animal deserves a second chance at a happy life.
Not The Only One
Buddy isn’t the only animal at a rescue shelter. Across the country, more than 120,000 animals are currently in a rescue shelter. So next time, instead of buying a new puppy, why not consider adopting a dog from a rescue centre?
After all, everyone deserves a second chance at life.
