5 Quick and Easy Methods To Keep Your Pet’s Dental Health In Tip-Top Condition

5 Quick and Easy Methods To Keep Your Pet’s Dental Health In Tip-Top Condition

Megan Hurley March 24, 2022

As adults, we know that it’s important to keep our teeth healthy and clean. And that is the same with our pets too. As pet owners, it is our responsibility to keep up with our pet’s dental health.

Poor dental health can lead to a wide variety of issues. Most noticeably, you might start to notice that your pet has bad breath, or their teeth look off. What you can’t see however, is rotting gums and teeth and other diseases that will cause your dog pain.

So it’s important to regularly check up on your dog’s dental health and give their teeth a clean. But how do you do it? We’ve got 5 easy solutions for you.

1. Dental Treats

Dental Treats are one of the most common and easy ways to maintain your pet’s dental health. Simply give your pet one of these treats before bed and your work is done.

Most dental treats serve two purposes. Firstly, their chewy yet rough texture is designed to remove built-up plaque. Secondly, most dental treats/sticks are made with pet friendly ingredients that fights against both plaque and bacteria, leaving your dog with a healthy breath and a healthy mouth. However, dental treats can be more expensive than some of the other options on this list.

2. Brush their teeth

In addition to dental sticks, you should also try and regularly give your dog’s teeth a brush. It might not be easy or pleasant, but it’s one of the best ways to ensure a healthy mouth.

You can brush your pet’s teeth using a dog friendly toothbrush and toothpaste. When it comes to choosing a toothbrush, there’s two options. There’s the common toothbrush that we all know. However, there are also finger toothbrushes available, where you can slip the bristled tip over your finger and brush away.

When it comes to dog toothpastes, there’s a wide range of flavours available that can help entice your dog such as beef, chicken, and peanut butter.

You can help your dog get accustomed to having their teeth brush by doing it regularly. Thus, they will be more comfortable over time and make this process easier.

3. Dental Wipes

If your pet refuses to have their teeth brushed, or if you don’t have enough time, you can always use dental wipes. While dental wipes might be less effective than brushing, it is much better than nothing.

Dental wipes are designed to be used on one finger. This makes it easier for you to give your pet’s teeth a quick clean. Dental wipes are a great option for puppies and dogs that are averse to having their teeth brushed.

Dental wipes are a great alternative to brushing if your dog has a smaller mouth or if they are scared of brushing.

4. Something to chew

One of the easiest methods of maintaining your dog’s dental health is providing them with toys and objects to chew. A dog’s natural chewing motion helps scrape plaque off their teeth.

Giving your pet chew toys is a great way to keep their teeth clean. And even better, you don’t actually need to do anything, and your dog thinks it’s a treat. Just make sure to get them an appropriately sized toy and make sure they’re not chewing on bones. This is because they might choke on the bones. They can even sustain a grave injury if the bone splinters and the fragments get lodged in your pet’s digestive tract.

5. Professional Help

Lastly, you can also seek professional help. Even humans seek out dentists for a professional clean on a regular basis. But sometimes, even when you take very good care of your pet’s teeth and gums, they can still become dirty and require a professional clean.

However, this option is by far the most priciest option here. So it’ll be better (and much cheaper!) to invest in some high quality products listed above to keep your dog’s mouth clean.

You can also consider getting a professional to look over your dog's dental health.

Regardless of the method, just make sure you’re doing it on a regular basis, ideally once a day. Regularly cleaning is the best way to maintaining your dog’s dental health.
